Dexter Cattle

Here at Painted Hill we raise Dexter cattle. They are a small Irish breed. They are considered to be dual purpose-meaning they are good for dairy and meat production. Dexters finish very well on grass and because they are small and easy to handle they are perfect for the size of our farm.

Why eat grass fed beef? Grass fed beef is not a new fad. Grass is what cows are supposed to eat. Grass fed beef is more nutritious with less saturated fat, cholesterol and calories than corn fed beef. Its higher in beta-carotene, vitamin E, vitamin C, and a number of health promoting fats such as omega 3. Much of this is true for pork and chicken as well. more info …

Our animals spend their days wandering in the fresh air and sunshine. They are not subject to stress or abuse so they are happy and healthier than those in confinement and feed lot operations. Because of this they do not require antibiotics.

Mulefoot Hogs

Mulefoot hogs are an endangered heritage breed. Today the mulefoot is the rarest of American swine breeds. Although the origin is not clear it was found in the southern half of the Midwest and southwest. Its most distinctive feature is the solid hoof, which resembles that of a mule. We have chosen to breed these hogs not only to help with conservation but also because they are very hardy and have a fairly gentle disposition. Mulefoots forage well on grass. the meat produced is a red beefy color, incredibly tender, and very tasty! The meat is highly sought after and considered gourmet quality. Because of this, they are sold at a higher price per pound.

Poultry

Free-range chickens, ducks, and turkeys

At Thompson's Painted Hill Farm we take great pride in knowing that all of our products are raised naturally in environments that are not stressful to the animals. Animals that are raised in Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs) are generally less healthy because they live in less than ideal conditions. Our animals are allowed to roam free on our farm and graze as they please. The food is not brought to them — they find the food they need. Still not convinced? Go watch movies like Food Inc. and see for yourself why this is such an important movement for us!

All of our poultry are started indoors then moved outside to graze in rotational paddocks. Poultry tastes better and is better for you when they can be out on grass. They also receive an all organic grain ration and vitamin and mineral supplements.
